Tips & Tricks for Styling a Console Table

I am such a sucker for good entryway styling, especially when it includes a console table. To me, a console table in an entryway is one of the first things guests see when they enter your home and first impressions are everything! A well-styled console table and entryway also sets the tone for your home’s aesthetic and what one can expect as they move from one space to the next.

When styling your console table, you not only want it to look good, but you also want it to be functional. After all, it is the first piece of furniture in your entryway!

Balance the Weight

When styling open bottom console tables, opt to balance the visual weight beneath the table. For this, I usually opt for ottomans for baskets. Not only do both provide a second function (seating and storage) but they also provide textural detail. Stacked coffee table books, vases, and art are also a great way to fill in the space and provide a unique way to balance the visual weight.

Utilize Art or a Mirror

By hanging art or a mirror above your console table, you draw the eye in and balance the rest of the styling. Plus, a piece of art or a mirror pulls your console table styling together.

Add the Big Pieces First

I always recommend starting with the large pieces and working your way to the smaller ones when styling your console table. This includes baskets and ottomans underneath the piece, followed by coffee table books, lamps, vases, layered art, and any other bold pieces you want to style on top of the console table. If you’re having trouble getting your styling to look right, try balancing the pieces on each end of the table. For example, a lamp and vase that are the same height.

Don’t Forget to Add in the Small Details

Once you have your larger pieces styled, start adding in small accessories. A few ways I do this is a small catchall dish for keys, a candle for scent, a small sculptural piece, and even some fresh greenery. This is always a great time to include any small pieces that you’ve collected over the years or any souvenirs for trips!

Styling your console table can seem like a straightforward task but once you start getting hands-on, it can get overwhelming. Don’t be afraid to take your time! Move pieces around, sit on it for a few days, then continue to make tweaks until you’ve achieved the look you’re going for. Styling your home and adding in new decor is an ever-evolving process and that’s ok!
