I’m so happy warmer weather is officially here! It makes me want to spend more time lounging outside by the pool and hanging out on our back patio. When the weather is super nice, we love to have dinner out back by the pool while we watch the kids swim. Most summer nights we will grill dinner outside and just hang out on the patio all evening – even after the kids go to bed. Our outdoor living space really becomes the heart of our home in the warmer summer months.Outdoor Patio Decorating Ideas

Our outdoor living areas are definitely more casual versions of our indoor living areas. With our indoor living spaces, I tend to lean more toward decorating with neutral colors, but I love to have a little fun with color and prints with my patio decor. I’m a big fan of navy and pink, so my outdoor areas tend to be decorated with shades of those colors – especially blues. Outdoor Living Sofas and SectionalsOutdoor Living Furniture IdeasShop the Look here:

My main goal when creating our outdoor space was to have a relaxing and inviting area where our friends and family could gather and enjoy being outside together. We like to spend as much time outside as possible during the summer. Especially after this last year, we are hoping to have lots of pool days with friends! I love to have a sofa or sectional for outdoor seating. Outdoor sectionals are gorgeous and inviting – I love this 7-piece outdoor sofa/sectional because you can rearrange it in whatever shape works best for your space. But if the footprint doesn’t work for your patio design, an outdoor sofa is a great option as well. You could also use both a 3-seat sofa and an outdoor love seat instead of a sectional if you prefer to have more options for rearranging!

A sofa makes the patio feel like an inviting outdoor living room where there’s space for everyone to sit. I love to add several throw pillows to our outdoor sectional to really give it a warm and welcoming feel. You can even add a few throw blankets for the chillier evenings in the spring and fall. Make sure to add coffee tables or side tables for guests to easily place their drinks on too!

An outdoor rug is a must for making your outdoor living space feel warm and inviting. It really makes such a big difference in softening the space. The outdoor living area is perfect to add a rug with some color and a more bold pattern. I usually go a lot more muted and neutral for my interior living spaces. But our outdoor living spaces are much more casual and therefore a really easy place to decorate with colorful accents. If I’m going to decorate with color, it’s in our outdoor spaces, and a rug is a great way to bring color in (or, out).

I really love to use blue accents out by the pool because it ties the whole space together with the water. This bold navy and white rug is one of my favorites! This Momeni rug is a gorgeous shade of blue and is another one that looks gorgeous by a pool. Outdoor rugs are made for a lot of wear so don’t be afraid of dirt. They’re super easy to lightly power wash when you need to.

Outdoor Living Chairsoutdoor home chairs

I always like to have a few outdoor chairs around in addition to our outdoor sectional/sofa seating. When you’re designing your patio with your own outdoor living furniture ideas, keep in mind outdoor chairs don’t have to be an exact match to your sofa or sectional. You can add in some texture with a wicker or natural weave chair, or warmth with a wooden chair with cushions like these. Pairing these beautiful wicker chairs with a larger sofa balances the space out. Outdoor chairs also make people more comfortable in case they don’t want to be right next to someone else! If you’ve got a fire pit area, having several chairs around it is perfect so that everyone can enjoy the fire and make s’mores.

These lounge chairs  are a must if you have a pool side area!

They have a similar look to our Restoration Hardware loungers. They’re perfect for laying out while supervising the kids swimming. The kids also love them for when they just want to hop out of the pool for a minute and have a quick snack. We also have a couple of these blue and white umbrellas out by our lounge chairs, and love them. The umbrellas are perfect to enjoy lounging without having to be in the hot sun.

I always like to add a small throw pillow to my outdoor chairs to make them extra comfortable! I think it’s fun to have a couple of coordinating accent chairs to compliment the design style but add an extra element of interest. I’ve really been loving the trendy Egg Chair style lately – they really are comfortable and are so cute. Egg chairs have been really popular over the past couple of summers. If you want a really relaxing element that makes you feel like you’re on the beach in Tulum, an egg chair is perfect!

An outdoor coffee table is a great piece to incorporate to make a your outdoor seating area feel extra comfortable and functional. If you don’t have space for an outdoor dining table, a coffee table like this light brown eucalyptus one would be perfect to make outdoor dining more functional. This set of 2 nesting coffee tables also provides plenty of space for drinks and food – and you can arrange them to make them easy to reach from any seat.

To make your outdoor living seating area feel more comfortable, a coffee table is a great place to style a few pieces of outdoor decor. The coffee table itself can even be a point of interest! This black metal outdoor coffee table would make a great statement. Or this rattan round all-weather coffee table is also so beautiful and would add interest to an outdoor living space. Placing a little plant on your coffee table (real or faux) for decor is perfect for some added warmth and texture. Depending on if you have a covered outdoor space, you could add several other decor elements to the coffee table! I would add an outdoor-friendly serving tray and a citronella candle to look beautiful and keep the mosquitos away.

Sometimes I think you can never have enough throw pillows. I love using throw pillows to mix patterns and add coordinating colors to our outdoor living area. And I always find myself rearranging them to give the space an easy refresh. This 20″ Reversible pillow is perfect for mixing and matching, and I love this round pom-pom pillow for something a little different! The Shibori pattern of this pillow is perfect for using on the patio because it reminds me of a refreshing pool! I love this embroidered zig zag lumbar pillow. It’s perfect for pattern-mixing and adding just the right amount of texture.

I also always love to have a few anchor pillows that are more muted, like this neutral and navy stripe pillow. That way the patterns don’t get too overwhelming.  This cream textured pillow is gorgeous and this neutral textured lumbar pillow would be perfect anchor pillows! If you’ve got a good assortment of pillows with coordinating colors and patterns, place them throughout your outdoor living and lounging areas. This will create a really beautiful and cohesive look!
