I hope everyone is having a fantastic week so far! Spring time and warmer weather just instantly puts me in a better mood. The kids get to spend time outside playing (so less yelling inside for mama to hear – hallelujah!) and more sunlight makes the days so much longer/efficient!  Another big thing I’m happy about is putting away all the winter clothes and getting all the adorable spring clothes! I recently shared some Spring outfit picks on my Fun and Affordable Spring Fashion Finds blog post last week. All great choices and easy on the pocket-book for sure!

Since I live in Oklahoma the weather seems to be very indecisive.  So, on those days that are cooler, the kids love playing in their playroom!  I love the kid’s playroom because it’s their space. Having a dedicated playroom was a major must-have when we were designing our custom home because the playroom helps keep the rest of the house clutter free by containing all the toys and etc.

When we moved in 4 years ago, our 3 children were all 5 years old and under. But even now with a 9, 6 and 4 year old..it is used daily. I purposefully created that room right off the kitchen and mudroom so that I could be within ear shot of them while I was cooking or working at my desk . At our previous home, the playroom was upstairs and they never wanted to go up there and be far away from me.

Awesome Playroom Decorating Ideas for Kids

Today I will share my Awesome Playroom Decorating Ideas for Kids with simple décor and lots of helpful organization tips! I had the pleasure of partnering with At Home decor superstore recently on their “The Perfect One” campaign. They asked me to find that “perfect” home decor piece that was missing from the kids’ playroom space and share the room before and after. Notice the BEFORE above. It was very simple but boring and lacking color.

I was also able to add a few more At Home items to do an adorable playroom refresh.  If you have not visited an At Home before, I highly recommend doing so! With more than 30 years in the home decor business, they offer more than 50,000 on-trend products to fit any style and budget.  I easily found 2 cart loads of items and wanted to bring home more with me the day I visited my local At Home! They have a very large store with everything from rugs, dining furniture, wall decor, and so much more!   Let’s begin with my awesome playroom decorating ideas for kids that they are sure to love…

1. Choose your Color Palette

Before decorating the playroom, I knew I needed it to be gender neutral since we have 1 boy and 2 girls. Our home through out is light and airy with lots of clean lines and neutral colors (except for my utility room..click here to see how bold I went). I knew I wanted their room to have that same feeling, but with a few pops of colors to make it fun for them. Also, another perk of having a fairly neutral playroom is that you won’t have to make major updates or change paint as the kids get older.

Once they age out of all of the toys and etc., we plan to make this a cozy family hangout room with a sectional and TV. I won’t have to do much besides move all of the toys out of the room. Since the main furniture pieces are white and the walls and trim are white (Sherwin Williams Natural Choice), the pink play kitchen and all of the colorful toys provide enough color. We also have a fun colorful print on the wall where the toy storage is along with a few white matted frames with close-ups of our sweet kids faces. playroom decorating ideas for kids with framed photos, toy closet, containers and chairplayroom decorating ideas for kids with framed photos, toy closet, containers, tables and chairs

2. Think about Toy Storage

If someone could have warned me about how MANY toys kids accumulate, I never would have believed them! But with birthdays and holidays alone, our kids are very blessed to have such a full room of toys. But, organization is KEY! Let me say that again…toy organization is key to not lose your mind mama and end up with piles of toys and small pieces strung out all over the floor!  We have similar white cube wall units that perfectly house toys and square bins in a very efficient and organized manner.

The bins are labeled with items like trucks, babies, blocks, and more. It has helped SO much keeping the toys under control and letting the kids pick up after themselves and actually know where to put things back when playtime is over. Check out my How to Get Your Home Organized Once and For All blog post I wrote recently where I share more about the simple techniques I practice to keep the house and playroom clutter free.

I am a big believer in purging as well….we have the kids get a trash bag every 6 months or so and fill with toys that they would like to donate. And I will be honest, sometimes I do that myself when they are at school!  Haha. They don’t even miss them and it helps them actually see and play with that they do have. For more help with attractive toy organization, I found a variety of darling wicker baskets from At Home that not only help with storage, but they also act as décor! Win/win for sure! At Home’s decorative storage aisle was impressive.white table with steel chairs for kids, plants on the table, and wall decorationschair with throw pillows on it and a foot stoolchair with throw pillows on it, a foot stool, table, and a carpet

3. Add in Kid-Friendly Furniture Pieces

Their play table and chairs have been such a great piece that they use daily. They sit and play games on it, do arts and crafts and so much more at their play table. I love that they use this table to be creative and do what kids should be doing! Has anyone else noticed how much times have changed?! I didn’t have a cell phone or iPad until I was an adult and now I feel like I can’t pull my kids away from them!  To encourage reading and time away from technology, I created a designated reading area in the corner.

Our 9-year-old is such an avid reader, I love that she can curl up with a book but not feel isolated. Once I saw the rattan chair and tassel pouf at my local At Home store, I knew I needed it for playroom. The chair is comfy and durable (it is actually an outdoor chair) and so stylish. The pouf can be used as a small side table or as a foot rest. I think it’s absolutely precious when I see our younger 2 sitting next to each other sharing a book and creating memories.

For added comfort and style in the rattan chair, I found 2 throw pillows at At Home. One is faux fur and the other is a black and white pillow (2 colors that are always going to be in style) that has little pom-poms on the border of the pillow. Such a fun twist and it matches our neutral roman shades on the windows perfectly.woman arrange the decorations in a rooma room with chair and foot stoolwoman decorating a room for kids woman adding plants as decoration on a white table for playroom decorating ideas for kidsa play room for kids with a table, chairs, and baskets

4. Add in Stylish Decor to complete the space

Since the desk and lighting pedant above are both in the center of the room, I wanted to add my “perfect one” from At Home there! I added the cutest rug from At Home under the desk that helped ground the play table and complete the space if you will! It’s seriously the perfect piece for the room! I found several rugs that would have worked well…their variety is amazing! I chose a neutral rug with tan/white that had the cutest geometric design and frayed ends. The price was under $100. I would recommend having a rug under your kids play table because in our house that’s a high traffic area so I like that it decreases wear and tear on the carpet.

For simple, yet cute wall décor, I chose gold metal “PLAY” letters from At Home.  I already had the round mirror on that wall, but I felt like it was very bland before. The PLAY letters are so fun and perfectly fitting for a playroom. I thought about doing the word “READ” but chose Play instead.  Every space needs a bit of greenery, so I placed 2 adorable pots of artificial grass from At Home on the play table for a pop.woman sitting on a table and holding two white pots with plants for playroom decorating ideas for kidstelevision and toys in a kids paly rooma kids play room with white walls and toys on the floor

On the other wall in the playroom is the pink play kitchen we have had for years. We do have a TV in there when they want to watch cartoons. Also, we have a few white faux animal heads on the wall around the TV for decor. We also have a closet in the playroom where all of their art supplies, coloring books and more are stored in labeled bins. I can’t tell you enough how nice it is to have this designated kids’ space where everything in the room has a “home”.
