How to Not Wash your Hair Everyday

Happy Fall to everyone!  I don’t know if it’s the weather or all the Hocus Pocus, but it’s been crazy lately!  If you missed my previous blog post, it was my tips on how to decorate for Halloween quickly and on a budget.  I LOVED how my front porch turned out. You still have time to get in the Halloween spirit or pin my images for next year.

Today I want to share with you about how to not wash your hair every day and exactly what I do to extend time between washes. Being a woman, we require so much upkeep already, don’t you agree?! I’m constantly on the go and so I always wash my hair at night after our 3 kids are in bed. Let’s be honest… it’s really the LAST thing I want to do after they are all asleep.  I also got hand tied extensions recently with blonde balayage color so that added even more time and maintenance to my hair care routine. But, even with all of extra hair from the extensions, I typically only wash it every 5-7 days. So how do I keep it looking fresh and maintained? I am sharing my secrets with you today on how to not wash your hair everyday…

First, are you wondering if you NEED to wash your hair more often? Here are a few reasons why I don’t:

  • Shampoo can strip your hair and scalp of natural oils. Natural oils help rehydrate the scalp and can be good for your hair.
  • Daily washing can result in more split ends and a drier, flaky scalp.
  • Color can fade faster, and NO one wants that after spending a fortune at the salon.
  • Use of a blow dryer and curling iron can be extremely damaging so I DO NOT want to add any extra heat to my hair than what is absolutely necessary.
  • HUGE time and money saver by limiting my washes.
  • Environment friendly! 5 gallons of water are averagely used in a 5-minute shower.  By not washing as much, you can help reduce water waste and your water bill.

Upkeep of my hair throughout a typical week and how to not wash your hair everyday:

  • I use this shower cap every time I shower when I am not washing my hair. I swear by this! It helps prevent frizz from the humidity of the shower and my hair is very frizz prone. My curls last longer because of this.
  • I use my favorite dry shampoo on day 3 and every day after. Along my hair line and part, and around my ears. I also use it after I work out to absorb any sweat. Dry shampoo is essential since it absorbs the oil and sweat that make your hair greasy, but it also helps to add volume and nice texture. It also makes your hair smell good!
  • I use my fave detangling brush. It keeps my hair tangle free with no damage. We have them stashed all over the house!
  • I try to not touch my hair a ton throughout the day. Your hands touch so many things throughout the day so I try to not add any additional toxins. You know our cell phones have GOT to be covered in filth!
  • Hair ties – be sure to use the proper hair ties to avoid creases. After a long day, a messy bun is unavoidable. By using these hair ties, I ward off those unwanted creases! These hair ties also have another benefit, they do not pull the hair tightly which helps with breakage.
  • In my shopping cart, I have silk pillowcases that I’ve been eagerly waiting to try! Silk pillow cases help reduce bed hair and wrinkles as well. In addition, silk retains moisture which in turns helps not dry out your hair! Have any of you used silk pillowcases?! If you have, please message me with your opinion!

And my MOST recent addition to my hair routine is the Pantene Charcoal Collection Shampoo & Conditioner. There are SO many benefits to your hair from the use of charcoal:

  • Detoxifies hair – meaning rids it of dirt and oil.
    • Did you know hair gains about 4% of its weight from oils, pollution, leave in hair products, etc. GROSS!
    • By cleaning your pores on your scalp, it also helps with hair growth! Something we can all appreciate.
  • By purifying your hair, it helps better absorb the good nutrients that you apply to it.
  • Helps maintain your hair’s moisture level.
  • Adds volume to your hair.
  • Assists with dandruff, oily/itchy scalps.

Why I chose to start using activated charcoal:

If you are concerned about charcoal, then you shouldn’t be. It is in everything from face wash to teeth whitener these days and now you can get the benefits in your shampoo and conditioner.  The Pantene Charcoal Collection  is composed of activated charcoal, pro-vitamin B5 and antioxidants. The formula is composed of mint leaves, water lily and amber.  Another great thing about this line is that it is free of silicone, parabens and dyes.

Charcoal is safe to use on color-treated hair. Since coloring can be so damaging on your hair, the benefits of the nutrients leave your hair refreshed and renewed.  I have blonde balayage hair that can sometimes turn brassy with mineral deposits from hard water and more. The Charcoal will clarify your hair of any mineral deposits and anything else that might be lurking in your water and mess up your hair color.

Let’s be honest…being a girl is expensive! Haircuts, hair coloring, and extensions already cost an arm and a leg. Products like thermal protection, dry shampoo, hair spray and leave-in conditioner are also costly.  The best part of Pantene’s line is that it’s affordable!  You don’t have to make a special trip to a beauty store to purchase; it’s available here. Good quality doesn’t have to come at a high price.

I hope this info has inspired you on how to not wash your hair every day. Your hair will thank you!
