Big Boy Bedroom Ideas you Must See Now

This big boy bedroom ideas post has been a long time in the making and I am SO happy to share it with you today. If you keep up with me daily on Instagram @curlsandcashmere, you know my husband and I have 3 children…an 8 year old daughter, a 5 year old son and a 3 year old daughter. Our son had been in need of a big boy room (check out his toddler room in this post) for quite some time. He is very tall for his age (95th percentile) and poor thing was still sleeping in a toddler bed that he barely fit in. Middle child problems I guess?! I began daydreaming of big boy bedroom ideas and ways to make his current paint colors and bold striped ceiling still work in the space and as he grows older too. A goal when decorating my children’s rooms has always been to decorate a room that will transition well with minor updates as needed, not a major overhaul. I would rather save my decorating budget for the kitchen or another major room in our home! Once I had a plan and a vision in mind, I was so happy to partner with Capitol Lighting for his bedroom update. Not only does Capitol Lighting have an amazing selection of lighting for your home, but they offer furniture and various home decor as well. With over 88 years of experience in the light fixture and home décor business, I knew they would have everything we needed for the big boy bedroom ideas I wanted to achieve.

Big Boy Bedroom Ideas – Paint Colors

As you can see, Hudson has a neutral grey paint (Sherwin Williams Worldy Grey) in his room and a blue and white striped ceiling (Sherwin Williams Sky Blue). I love the stripes SO much and knew I wanted to keep them. I briefly thought about painting them charcoal grey or navy, but in the end, kept them the same bright blue color for a pop. FYI..his wall paint color is the perfect greige if you are looking to update a bedroom or any other room in your home. It looks perfect no matter the light. To update his room and make it more mature and not so toddler like, I knew I needed to tone down all of the bright primary colors sprinkled throughout his toddler room. I was so sad to do this, but I took down all of his brightly colored books that were on his wall shelves and put them in a basket in his closet.  I also painted his name letters you see above his window (they used to be orange, red, yellow, etc.) with Sherwin Williams Navel, which is the perfect navy paint color. By taking away all of the primary colors, I felt like we were on the right track to updating his room and making it more mature.

Big Boy Bedroom Ideas – New Bed and Bedding

Once I had a color scheme in mind, I started the hunt for a big boy bed and bedding. Queen size is what we gave our older daughter when we updated her room, and that size will be a must for a growing boy over the years. I wanted it to be masculine and mature, and of course, stylish! I love the look of the oversized tufted headboard, so I found one locally in a dark charcoal color (similar linked). And I have to mention his new mattress. Several months ago we were given a Christeli mattress for our master bedroom , and we couldn’t be happier with it after all these months. Christeli was so generous and sent a queen size mattress for Hudson’s big boy bedroom. Our daughter wants a new mattress for her room because she thinks his mattress is so much more comfortable and it really is!

As far as his bedding, since his gallery wall of floating shelves is very busy with pattern, I knew I wanted to keep his bedding very subdued and simple. I love a classic stripe (can’t you tell) so I found a grey and navy striped set from RH kids (similar bedding linked). It is very mature and could work for many years, and it coordinated well with the navy letters and new charcoal headboard. I did white sheets, these white euro pillows and a white downlite comforter as the base for the bedding. You just cannot go more classic than that. We have the same white bedding scenario in our master bedroom. I then added the striped blanket to the foot of the bed and mixed in the striped shams. I love the look of mongolian lamb fur, so this mongolian lumbar pillow was a no brainer for me and adds some great texture to the bedding. I also found a fun inexpensive throw pillow at Target with navy, grey and turquoise to bring in all 3 colors to the bed.

Big Boy Bedroom Ideas – Gallery Wall

We had the floating shelves built by a trim carpenter when we built this home, but you could easily get the same look with hanging white floating shelves. They have been such a great addition to his bedroom..side note..Hudson had the same exact room at our previous home. Same paint colors, same stripes and we had a wall of shelves built to hold books and decor. I loved it so much, I did the same exact thing when we moved! The shelves have housed all of his children’s books and have provided hours of play and reading. The kids like to pretend his room is a library and check out books. So you can see why I was sad to take his books down, but they aren’t far away in his closet now. I wanted to bring in some wood elements to his shelving along with simple white gallery frames. I chose all different sizes and mat sizes..I just had to make sure the frames would fit on the shelves. They measure 32″ apart fyi. I printed off lots of black and white pictures to put in the frames. I finished up the shelf styling by going to Hobby Lobby and Target  and added a few pieces of black and white boyish wall decor as well. All of my big boy bedroom ideas were starting to come together and I was loving it!  FYI…his roman shade was custom.

Big Boy Bedroom Ideas – New Lighting

I was so excited to start choosing the lighting selections for his room from Capitol Lighting. They have SO many cool options, it was hard to choose. I took several days to make my final decisions. I was leaning for something a bit more modern for his ceiling fixture and found that in the Felix 6 arm chandelier. The black and brass detailing on the light is very in line with my style and I love using the vintage type lightbulbs. The chandelier comes in several size options so you can for sure find the perfect size for your space. Then it was on to lamps. Visual Comfort is the brand I chose for his lamps and is seen through out our home and is a brand that Capitol lighting carries. I went with more masculine lamps that would go with any type of decor. I chose the Thomas O’Brien Caron 27 Inch High Table Lamp for his bedside table and the taller Thomas O’Brien Nina 31 Inch High Table Lamp for his dresser/console table. Both are such handsome lamps that will last the test of time. Thank you again to Capitol Lighting for being such a great home resource.

Big Boy Bedroom Ideas – Decor Pieces

I chose this Butler Industrial Chic Accent Table from Capitol Lighting as his nightstand. I think mixing in pieces that aren’t typically bedroom furniture is the key to a well styled room. I know it is easier to go and choose an entire matching bedroom suit, but instead consider mixing and matching the pieces to give it a more custom look. Since his console table has lots of drawers with good storage, I went with something more open for his nightstand. You don’t want all the pieces in a room to be heavy, if that makes sense. This table fit the bill and has room for some storage baskets to hold books and toys. Capitol Lighting also had this industrial style mirror to hang above his existing console table (similar console linked). It is such a good hefty size and hung vertically instantly makes the room appear larger and the ceilings higher. As you can tell, I like mixing and matching metals so don’t let that scare you. Brass and chrome are mixed throughout my home. I styled the table with a fun white letter board, a few masculine knick knacks and some greenery to bring to life. Finally, on the wall next to his nightstand, I hung 4 chrome frames with linen mats in them. Inside are these affordable  navy airplane prints. You can choose any color of prints to coordinate with your room. Below the prints is a white leather pouf  for some interest. Above his bed is a wooden wall accent that we have had for years.

I hope you enjoyed my tips and big boy bedroom ideas in this post. Hudson absolutely loves his new room and felt so special to be apart of this. Thank you to Capitol Lighting for partnering with me on his big boy bedroom! And thank you for reading!
